The one thing that really hurt about Dr. J. was he had to be sold in order to pay for the huge entrance fee for the NBA/.

I switched to the Sixers after DR. J. left and it was great because we used to get the Philadelphia station on our cable in North Jersey.

I wouldn't beat yourself up too much in hindsight Josh. A 15 year old kid can't do or say very much against a varsity head coach with tenure. You could have quit but what would that have solved.

I think the only saving grace in those scenarios is that when you get older you realize that that coach wasn't such a big deal. Big fish in a little pond my sister used to say.

Thanks Josh. I'm having a hellacious day at work and stopped by Cardboard Gods hoping there was something new to occupy my mind for a bit. You delivered.

I thought about including Richardson, but my pained memories of Toney are of him going on explosive, weird-jump-shot offensive rampages, not so much of him playing a ton of defense, at least not in his first couple years.

The thing about those early 80s Sixers teams was that they had a bunch of players who could go after it on defense. You mentioned several but didn't list either Andrew Toney or Clint Richardson. Toney is remembered as a shooter but he was a great all-around player and I only wish he (like Walton) had been given better feet. He killed the Knicks and I'm sure you have no shortage of Andrew Toney nightmares as a Boston fan, either. Richardson wasn't the star that Toney was, but he could play outstanding defense.
