wow, steve staggs... #2 if i recall correctly.
as a 7-year-old superfan of the super bad '77 jays (and not the james brown kind of "super bad"), i tried to love most of the marginal two-steps-from-the-glue-factory utility players that took to the field that year, but i had trouble warming to steve staggs. he wasn't semi-loveable like alan ashby, he didn't capture our attention like doug ault with his two opening-day homers, he just committed a lot of errors and then moved on...

I was also thinking this was about Dave Skaggs until I did a double take on the name. It made me look at Dave Skaggs career stats and it turns out that there wasn't a hell of alot to write home about with him either.

This is a fairly easy one--we're lookin' at Tiger Stadium, and Staggs only had a half-season's worth of games under his belt when the '78 set came out. The Jays did go to Detroit twice while Staggs was with the club in '77, and each had a day game. But only one of those was on a weekend. So going strictly by my "Topps photogs pretty much stuck to weekend work" theory, I'd say this was before the Sunday, July 24th game. Steve went 0 for 3 with a walk in a 6-2 loss. No RBIs.

Years ago when Jayson Stark was a reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer he had a weekly column similar to what he does for ESPN now. One of the features he had every year was the award for "Last Guy to Get a Hit." Tom Lawless won this award a few times. It was always a spirited competition.

Kind of reminds me of this post -- how about "Last Guy to Get an RBI."

It would make a great contest, much more challenging than MLB's Survivor or Beat the Streak. Just have to find a good site name (sorry -- zeroheroes.com is taken by a band).

Damn! I actually had bluegrass musician Ricky Skaggs in my head (he had no RBIs, either). Poor Steve Staggs, sets a record and still gets no respect.

I used to love the Blue Jays cards because they were so new an foreign in 1978. Oddly, the Mariners I found antagonistic.

gb5hof:
Amazingly enough, the collpased-chested Staggs showed some power in the minors, I don't have the card on me at the moment, but I recall seeing that he tallied 13 homers and 80-something RBI one year. Must have made the '78 drought all the more painful.

sb1902:
Fischlin does at least have the NL record. Also: somewhere Dave Skaggs is cringing as you refer to the RBI-less one as "Skaggsie" (and by the way, I don't blame you at all for that misidentification: I didn't really realize that Steve Staggs was not Dave Skaggs until I sat down and stared at his card for a long, long time this morning).

Somewhere, I imagine Mike Fischlin saying, "Thank God for ol' Skaggsie! otherwise this article would have been about me!" I RBIs are largely circumstantial, but those guys were really pushing it.

Odd how both Fischlin and Skaggs vied for the record in 1978.
