7. "chagrin" always bothered me. When I read it I think someone's grinning. "puissant" sounds the exact opposite of what it means. But I've never seen it used except ironically.

5. Fungate. I think that is how it is spelled. My uncle who had colon cancer and successfully fended it off, was in good shape when the tumor had only partially fungated. It sounds like his tumor was growing fungus on it, but I was told that it had to do with cancer cells multiplying. Sorry if this was a gross post. That word has been swirling in my head for months now.

4. 3 : That word, fungible, which I had to look up, has got to be near the top of the list of words that sound like something different than what they mean. You think it's going to be something fun and springy, like some sort of Nerf product, and then you read the definition and have go make coffee to stave off a nap. The top of my list of such words has got to be pulchritude, which means the exact opposite of how it sounds, all pulpy and disgusting, like the innards of a pumpkin. Anybody got any other such words?
