12. I took one look at this card and cracked up, because the pose he has for this card is perfect for the literal meaning of his name.

Now I can visualize similar cards of Davey Lopes running, and Barry Bonds laughing uproariously with his arm around a teammate (although I guess you'd have to go back a ways for that possibility to exist, clubhouse pariah that he is)...

11. Rick "Linear" Waits. Is it just me, or do the mustaches make the 70's guys look older than the goatees that players wear today?

10. He wasn't completely obscure, and his game didn't have any effect on the other team's pennant chances, but Mike Witt has to be in the Rick Waits Hall of Fame.

9. 7 I wouldn't think "someone I've never heard of" would be as strong a candidate as an established journeyman (which Waits was, despite his relatively tender age). In that vein, I thought that Brett Tomko had a chance to pitch his way to a Rick Waits ("For No Man") Award. Tomko's pitched in the postseason, but not well, and he's never been in a World Series.

Of course, he pitched like Brett Tomko, so it's a moot point.

6. 4 : Well, the D-Train didn't last 3 innings and didn't get credited for the win, plus in years to come whatever role he played as a 2007 pennant race spoiler will not be among his career highlights. Similarly, Jeff Suppan picked up a sloppy spoiler decision in Milwaukee, but it's not something that'll make his future wikipedia entry.

As for Jason Bergmann, he pitched 3 innings and gave up 3 hits and 3 runs, picking up a loss to even his season record at 6 and 6 and his lifetime record at 8 and 8. On the way to the game he lost a 20 dollar bill but after the game was anonymously given a Phillie-red 20 dollar American Express gift card.

So anyway, this committee member would have to recommend that no Rick Waits Award be given this year. However, perhaps an honorary Rick Manning Citation (named for the player who keyed two early Cleveland rallies in the 1978 Rick Waits victory over the Yankees) is in order for Corey Hart, who drove in 3 runs in the Milwaukee win over San Diego.

5. Does this award have to go to a pitcher? You might consider the Marlins' Hanley Ramirez, who after getting hit by a pitch Saturday and possibly breaking his hand, swore he would play Sunday and kick the Mets' asses. He didn't have a spectacular day yesterday, but he did walk to lead off the game and start the Fish's 7-run first that was the Mets' undoing.
