7. One thing I love about this blog is that many of the cards shown are ones I have (or had), but haven't looked at in many years. I'm sure I have that George Brett...

There was something about the 1979 set, when you'd open a pack and flip through the cards and see one with the third band, saying "All Star". Those cards, the All Star cards, seemed to have an extra bit of magic.

I just took a look through the 1978 and 1977 all-star sets (at the baseballcardproject.com), but it is somehow the 1979 all-star set that strikes my fancy.

True to this site's notion, for an inexplicable reason, when I clicked on Greg Luzinkski's 1979 All-Star card, I got a sense rush that took me back somewhere, unspecific, to 1979. I think his card was the last all-star card I got that year.

6. 3, 5: Apologies to the two active guys that I neglected to mention. In all matters (not just the third baseman issue) I suffer from the "the general discrimination against the present moment" that I mentioned above. Or to put it more frankly: I live almost completely in the past in every way possible. It didn't even occur to me to think about current players! I'll say this, both Rolen and Jones have a shot to be in the discussion by the time they retire, but in my opinion they've both got to keep it up for a while before pushing Brett or Schmidt out of the way. I guess the other current guy who might join the debate is A-Rod (blecch), depending on whether he is considered more a third baseman or a shortstop when all is said and done.

5. As a Chipper Jones' fan, I can only imagine the exasperation that Royals' fans must have felt with Brett's unbelieveable fragility. Brett played 150+ games 6 times in 21 freakin' seasons....hell Chipper had eight in a row.

BTW, how about Chipper's career line:

304/402/544, 369 homers.

Schmidt's career OPS+ is 147, Chipper's is 143.

Chipper is not in Schmidt or Matthews class, but he's a bit under-rated IMO.

4. For me it was Lindsay Wagner and Victoria Principal.

Postseason stats for the All-Star third basemen of my youth.

G.Brett 166AB .337/.397/.627
Schmidt 140AB .236/.304/.386

It's a small sample size but in more than a month of playoff baseball games Brett was Superman and Schmidt was Tony Womack. I'll take Brett. And the Bionic Woman.

1. Just a pleasure to read from first word to last. I always tense up a little when I click on Cardboard Gods because I know if it's a long post, I'm going to read and then reread and then there goes what work I have to do.
